Lovevery Companion Play Kit Review for 22-24 Months

The Lovevery Companion Play Kit is designed for children transitioning around the two-year mark, focusing on fine motor skills, building confidence, and helping kids discern differences between objects. Overall, the current configuration is quite good, but in our testing, three out of the four main components are must-haves. The biggest miss was the removal of the larger nesting stacking cups.

What Skills Does the Companion Kit Help Develop?

The play kit focuses on several developmental areas through its various components. The goal is to keep practicing fine motor skills and problem-solving as the child grows.

  • Fine Motor Skills & Coordination:

    • Wooden Posting Stand: Grasping the concept of using different sized dowels and inserting them into matching holes aids hand-eye coordination and problem-solving.
    • Buckle Barrel: Excellent for practicing bilateral coordination and building hand strength. In our experience, while difficult to unbuckle initially, it’s a key area for practice.
    • Mosaic Button Board: Helps strengthen the child’s hands and fingers, which is noted as important given the increased exposure to electronics.
    • Transfer Tweezers and Felt Stars: Crucial for developing the pincer grasp. We found that the included tweezers have less resistance, making them easier to use than metal tweezers.
    • Chunky Wooden Jigsaw: Helps teach how three-dimensional objects fit together. The puzzle encourages focus, persistence, and patience.
  • Cognitive & Emotional Development:

    • Montessori Animal Match: This activity helps children perceive similarities and differences, allowing them to classify objects into groups and connect images to real-life counterparts. It includes a matching drawstring bag for portability.
    • Book Graham Turns Two: While technically about the age, the book helps children make sense of various feelings and emotions by associating words with feelings, normalizing emotional range.

What Was Removed From the Kit (But Available Separately)?

A few items were removed from the kit but remain available through the subscriber shop:

  • Little Quinn Doll: Available for $30. The purpose is for pretend play, encouraging children to organize thoughts and develop plans by mimicking activities like feeding or changing the doll. If you already own the Avery doll, you might skip this unless you specifically want the overalls.
  • Carry Along Kit: Available in the subscriber shop for $18. This is a case for the child to carry their own items in, which appeals to toddlers who like taking things from room to room. In our view this item was overpriced, as cheaper alternatives exist.
  • Large Nesting Stacking Drip Drop Cups: Available for $15. These were my son’s favorite bath toys. The configuration and color theme are nearly identical to the smaller versions from the Inspector Play Kit, with the exception of the largest light blue cup, which has no holes. The large cups fit perfectly with the smaller ones, allowing for tower building.
  • Two-Part Puzzle and Box: This item was not reviewed as the option to purchase was unavailable. We already owned similar two-part puzzles and would have skipped this item anyway.

Which Items Were Kept in the Current Kit?

The current companion play kit contains several items that we found useful:

  • Wooden Posting Stand
  • Montessori Animal Match
  • Buckle Barrel
  • Mosaic Button Board
  • Transfer Tweezers and Felt Stars
  • Chunky Wooden Jigsaw
  • Book Graham Turns Two

The Final Verdict

The current Lovevery Companion Play Kit is considered a pretty good box overall. However, the removal of the large nesting stacking drip drop cups is a significant drawback. If Lovevery had kept the large nesting stacking drip drop cups in the kit, we would have called the play kit a must-have (for a price comparison against DIY alternatives, see our Lovevery Companion Play Kit Amazon alternatives review).
